What size will my baby need?

Green Kids nappies come in one size that comfortably fits a large range of babies!

Green Kids nappies have a unique design that allows them to fit most babies from birth to toilet training, depending on the build of your baby. This means that you should only have to purchase one complete set of nappies for your baby! For instructions and pictures showing how to use the baby on a new born, please see Use Instructions.

For some babies, you may find that the nappies will fit at the largest setting between 8-12 months. Most babies will trim down quite a bit as soon as they begin walking or crawling, and the nappies will then go back to fitting them on a smaller setting.

    How many nappies?

The number of nappies you will need depends on how often you want to wash, as well as how old your baby is. As a rough guide, you will need 1 or 2 days worth of nappies (depending on how often you wash) plus an extra 5 for use while the nappies are washing and drying. The following table will give you a rough estimate of how many nappies a baby might use per day. Please note that the actual number of nappies may vary from day to day, and from child to child. The following is just a guide.

    Child’s age Nappies per day

    4-18 months

We recommend that nappies be washed at least every second day, as this will reduce the possibility of smells, and ensure good hygiene in your laundry.

    Which type of nappies?

When buying a full set of Green Kids nappies, we recommend that you choose mostly Anytimes. Anytimes nappies are made from 100% poyester fabric, which makes them very durable and long lasting nappies that can be used both during the day or at night.

Minkytimes are another versatile choice, as they are also made from 100% polyester and are therefore suitable for either day or night use. The fluffiness of the Minky may change over time, but this will not affect the performance of the nappies.

It is always nice to purchase a few Funtimes for added interest, and for showing off! Just remember that Funtimes nappies are for use during the day only, for shorter perids of approximately 2-3 hours. They may begin to wick around the legs if left on for longer than 2-3 hours.

    Which type of Inserts?

All Green Kids nappies will require an absorbent insert to place inside the nappy. We offer a range of inserts specially designed to fit your Green Kids nappies. These inserts vary in price, absorbency, drying time, trimness and price, so you can choose your inserts based on your situation.

    Most babies will need:
Day time: 1 Hemp or Bamboo Insert per nappy.
Night time: 1 Hemp or Bamboo Insert and 1 Microfibre Insert per nappy.

If your baby is a heavy wetter and requires more absorbency, you can also add an additional hemp or bamboo booster or a Sherpa insert/booster to the combinations listed above. All Green Kids inserts have a star rating for the various features (drying time, absorbency and trimness), to make it easier to choose which will be best for your baby.

    About Bamboo
    • Bamboo is more absorbent than both cotton and hemp.
    • Bamboo is luxuriously soft, wash after wash.
    • Bamboo is highly breathable and has naturally antibacterial and antifungal properties.
    • Bamboo is a sustainable crop which requires no herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertiliser to grow (unlike cotton), so it is more environmentally friendly to grow and safer to use on sensitive skin.
    • Bamboo crops require far less water to grow than cotton.

    About Hemp
    • Hemp fabric has natural anti bacterial and anti fungal properties.
    • Hemp requires no herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertiliser to grow (unlike cotton), so it is more environmentally friendly to grow and safer to use on sensitive skin.
    • Hemp is more absorbent than cotton so less fabric is needed, resulting in less bulky but more effective nappies and boosters.
    • Hemp is 10 times stronger than cotton and is therefore much more durable.
    • Hemp fabrics become softer with age and through use.

    About Microfibre
    • Microfibre is lightweight and absorbent fabric.
    • Microfibre is very trim and fast drying.
    • Microfibre combined with either a hemp or bamboo insert is the perfect combination for a night time nappy. Just place them both into the pocket, with the microfibre closest to the suede cloth, and the hemp towards the back and it should last all night!

Alternatively, any other absorbent material can be used in the nappies, as long as it fits into the generously sized pocket. This could be anything from a folded up flannelette flat or terry square, to a bunny rug, flannelette pre-fold or even a tea towel!

    Setting up the Change Area

We recommend that you have a specific area set aside for changing your baby. This could range from a quality wooden change table with storage, to a simple change table, to even the top of a chest of drawers. It is ideal to have the change area at a height that means you do not have to bend too much, just to save your back. If you prefer to change your baby on the floor or on a bed, you could simply put the nappies and wipes into a basket, so it can be transported to wherever you are changing your baby.

The great thing about pocket nappies is that you can simply put the insert into the nappy, and it is ready to use. If your change table has storage drawers, it would be ideal to keep the nappies and accessories in the top drawer for easy access when changing. If your change table does not have drawers, but has a shelf, the nappies can either be stacked on the shelf, or alternatively you could get a nice basket to stack them into before placing on the shelf. If the change area has neither, simply place the nappies and accessories into a nice basket and place on the floor next to the change area.

Please remember never to leave a child unattended on the change table, as they can easily roll off and injure themselves.

    What else will I need?

    Wipes

You will also need some wipes, which can either be either bamboo wipes, cotton terry flannels or flannelette wipes. You will need approximately one wipe per nappy. Cotton terry flannels can be purchased from your local department store or supermarket and bamboo wipes can be purchased from Green Kids!

    Spray Bottle

A handy thing to have at your change area is a small water spray bottle, filled with water to squirt onto a wipe when it is needed. Some people add various essential oils, baby oil or top to toe wash into the bottle to give it a nice scent!
